11th January 2003 walk from Sedbergh

11th January 2003: A walk from Sedbergh
The President waiting for the rest of the party at the summit of Winder
Fred and Don walking up the summit of Winder.
Ride report by Simeon Orme
Due to the weather conditions e.i. the ice on the road, or was it that the area secretary did want to get new wheels & gears on his bike dirty and also that the Winter Journal had not landed through the postbox ( finally arriving on the 24th January) but has the meet had been advertised on the group’s website for the last few months ( I would advised members add the South Lakes Website to their Favourites List and the site up dated once or twice a month. For those of you who are reading this on the web, who think I gone nuts, this report will appear in the Journal in about three months time). It was decided that we would go for walk instead as all four of us had brought walking boots and rucksacks as well as the bikes.

As Pat ( the President) had rang Don up the day before to bring his walking boots.

After waiting for Don to changed into his walking kit, we headed off up the road to the Post Horn Cafe for morning coffee and a chat before starting the walk.

We then head out of Sedbergh up Howgill Lane to follow the bridleway  up through Lockbank Farm on to the Fell. With Pat and myself in the lead and Fred and Don at the back, we climb up to the top of Winder where we stop Photo stop and to wait for Don and Fred to catch up. With view of the lakes and the Lune Valley we carry on along the ridge toward Arant Haw.

As the cloud had come down and with snow on the ground as we nearer the summit we decided to follow the ridge down from the summit of Arant Haw to come out near Craggstone Wood. On the way down we stop for lunch with a fine views  of  Crosdale Beck through the mist in the valley below.

As we made our way back to civilization we cross over Crosdale beck and followed the footpath down through Crosdale Wood and Craggstone Wood to come out on Howgill Lane again. Which we followed back to Sedbergh. After putting the rucksacks away in the cars, we returned to Post horn for afternoon tea before heading home.
